Traveling from the UK to Europe with pets has undergone substantial regulatory changes following recent European Union updates. If you are planning a trip to France, Spain, or any other EU country, understanding the exact pet travel requirements is essential to avoid unexpected surprises at the border.

The Animal Health Certificate (AHC) Requirement

Since Brexit, UK-issued pet passports are no longer valid for entry into the EU. British residents must obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for their dog, cat, or ferret. This document must be issued by an official veterinarian within 10 days of travel and is valid for 4 days of entry into the EU, and up to 4 months for onward travel within the EU.

Mandatory Vaccines and Microchips

Before an AHC can be signed, your pet must meet strict health criteria, including an updated rabies vaccination and an authorized microchip identifier. Certain destinations like Ireland, Malta, and Finland also require tapeworm treatment prior to arrival.
